Humana, the Business Health Care Group’s administrative partner, has added 20 outpatient procedures to its online Hospital Cost Estimator for our region, bringing the total to 30 inpatient and 26 outpatient procedures searchable for cost estimates.

Humana focused on adding outpatient procedures because their costs more often fall below deductible levels, as compared to the costs of more expensive inpatient procedures. When the cost of a procedure falls below one’s deductible, the consumer is more likely to “shop around.”

Working with the BHCG, Humana has become a leader in the industry in revealing episode-of-care cost estimates based on contracted pricing. The cost estimates available online, which reflect pricing available only through Humana Preferred, encompass episodes-of-care—including facility, physician, ancillary physicians, etc. That’s a more comprehensive, more accurate estimate, as opposed to a la carte pricing, which is not fully understood by consumers.
